Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei which has been blacklisted by US recently said that it is targeting 1,00,000 applications for Harmony OS (Operating System) within a year to achieve self-reliance. Huawei chairman, Xu Zhijun, during a conference, said that the company’s ecosystem currently supports over 15,000 Harmony-based applications that cater to consumers’ essential needs, but there is a pressing demand for more personalised and niche apps.

He said, “Based on our analysis, for the Harmony ecosystem to be mature in meeting consumer needs, 100,000 apps is the milestone, and that is the key objective over the next six to 12 months.”

China Proving Why Necessity Is The Mother Of Invention?

The ambitious goal underscores the critical need for China to advance its domestic technologies amid rising tensions with the United States. Disputes over trade and technology have intensified, with President-elect Donald Trump signalling a more confrontational stance toward China.

Huawei introduced its operating system five years ago in response to US sanctions that restricted access to Google’s Android. Since then, the Shenzhen-based tech giant, known for its wide range of products from smartphones to laptops, has also created an open-source variant of the Harmony system. Xu added, “Huawei has been forced to accelerate developing its own operating system.”

He counts on developers to work hard to enrich the app offerings, and called on government agencies along with state companies as well as social organisations to use Harmony as their OS at work. He requested consumers to be tolerant of the system’s immaturity, saying, “The more people use it, the more quickly it will become mature.”

Towards the end, he said, “No way back leads to victory. Huawei will unwaveringly invest in developing the Harmony ecosystem, and strive to make the impossible possible.”
