Congress Working Committee to Convene Today to Discuss Lok Sabha Poll Outcome

The Congress party has convened a meeting of its Working Committee (CWC) today to deliberate on the recent Lok Sabha election results and chart the future course of action. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will chair the meeting, which is scheduled to commence at 11 am at the Congress headquarters on Saturday.

In the Lok Sabha elections, the votes for which were counted on June 4, the Congress emerged as the second-largest party, significantly improving its tally to 99 seats from 52 in the 2019 polls. This result allows the Congress to assume the Leader of Opposition position in the Lok Sabha after a decade, a role it missed out on in 2014 and 2019 due to its seat count falling below the required 10 per cent of the total seats in the House.

The upcoming meeting is expected to feature discussions on the election outcomes and the party’s strategy moving forward. Sources indicate that a section within the Congress is advocating for former party chief Rahul Gandhi to assume the leadership of the party and the opposition in the Lok Sabha. This issue is likely to be raised during the CWC meeting, which remains the highest decision-making body of the Congress, news agency PTI reported.

Top Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other senior leaders, will participate in these deliberations. The Congress, now a formidable force in Parliament, aims to challenge the government on pressing issues affecting the common populace, such as inflation and unemployment, in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Mamata Banerjee to Convene Meeting with Newly Elected TMC MPs

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has scheduled a meeting with the newly elected Lok Sabha MPs of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday, party sources revealed, as per PTI. The meeting comes in the wake of TMC’s resounding victory in the state, where the party secured 29 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats. The principal opposition, BJP, was reduced to 12 seats, while the Congress managed to win just one seat.

“The party supremo has convened a meeting of our newly elected MPs on Saturday. During the meeting, the political situation will be discussed,” a TMC leader stated, as quoted by PTI. Despite her departure from the INDIA bloc in West Bengal in January, Banerjee has affirmed that the TMC will remain part of the opposition alliance at the national level.
