Traffic to and from Paris Gare du Nord train station was halted by the police on Friday after a World War II bomb was found on tracks leading to the busiest terminal in France. Efforts are underway to disable the device.

According to a report by France 24, the national SNCF rail company said the “unexploded” bomb was found “in the middle of the tracks” overnight during maintenance work in the area of Saint Denis suburb.

An SNCF statement noted that traffic would be halted at train station, which hosts Eurostar trains and other high-speed and local services, until mid-morning on police’s request. “We invite travellers to postpone their trip,” it said.

In a post on X, the RER B suburban train said the bomb “dated to the Second World War”.

The Gare du Nord train station is situated in the north of Paris and is the busiest rail terminal in the country, serving approximately 7,00,000 people each day, according to the SNCF.

“Train traffic is interrupted at and from Gare du Nord until 10:00 a.m. at the request of the police. An unexploded bomb from the Second World War was discovered near the tracks,” the latest update by TER Hauts-de-France, the regional train network that operates in the region, read.

Eurostar’s webiste also shows that trains from London to Paris, which were set for departure before 10:30 GMT on Friday were cancelled, and that the routes from Paris to London before noon local time (11:00 GMT) were also cancelled, BBC reported.

In its updated, Eurostar said that “due to an object on the tracks near Paris Gare du Nord, we are expecting disruption to our services this morning”. The train company has allowed passengers the relief to get their train tickets exchanged for free to travel on another day and time in the same class, subject to availability. “Please change your journey for a different date of travel,” it added.

BBC reported large crowds of passengers waiting at the Gare du Nord for updates as signs warning further delay in services were put up at the terminal after the bomb’s discovery.
