In a heartwarming act of generosity, an American couple from Ann Arbor, Michigan, covered the cost of every meal in a busy Canadian restaurant. The act was an effort to express their apology for the contentious actions of US President Donald Trump.

According to a report by CBC News, diners at Toast, a local restaurant in Windsor, Ontario, were stunned when their meals were paid for by the American couple, saying that they didn’t agree with what Trump was doing and expressing their deep appreciation for Canada.

May Hermiz, the co-owner of Toast on Erie Street, said that she was stunned because “nobody has ever done that in our nine years of being in business, nobody has ever paid for the whole restaurant”, as per CBC.

Hermiz said the woman told patrons, “she hates what the United States is doing to us and she doesn’t support it. And she’s so happy we won the hockey game (new window) and it’s a little token of appreciation for Canadians and how much she loves us and how much she loves supporting local.”

A patron, Irene Chyz, was at the restaurant with a friend to celebrate a birthday. She recalled that the restaurant was very busy at the time. Chyz shared that the generous act brought her great joy, especially during a period when she had been troubled by Trump’s rhetoric about Canada.

She said people were going over to thank them for what they had done, for coming and being so supportive of Canada and their love of Canada. Chyz and her friend went over, thanked them, and gave them a big hug, and they were just such warm, lovely, lovely people, she added.

On Thursday, Trump announced that the tariffs on imports will go into effect on March 4 “as scheduled”, claiming that those countries were still not doing enough to stop the flow of drugs into the US.

“This is an abuse that took place for many, many years,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “The tariffs will go forward, yes, and we’re going to make up a lot of territory”, CBC reported.
