Russia-Ukraine War: After days of Russian strikes on power plants, Ukraine rolled out emergency blackouts on Tuesday due to a shortage of electricity in the system, news agency AFP reported. According to state power operator Ukrenergo, due to Russian strikes on power plants, Kyiv has been unable to deal with a temperature drop.

In recent months, Moscow has launched some of its most devastating strikes on Ukraine’s energy facilities, knocking out key facilities and forcing Kyiv to import electricity from neighbouring EU countries to fulfill demand.

Ukrenergo said that it is forced to introduce emergency shutdowns in all regions of Kyiv due to a shortage of electricity following strikes from Russia.

“From 21:00 to 24:00 (1800-2100 GMT), Ukrenergo is forced to introduce controlled emergency shutdowns in all regions of Ukraine,” it said in a post on Telegram, as quoted by AFP. “The reason for this is a significant shortage of electricity in the system as a result of Russian strikes and increased consumption due to a cold snap,” the post read. It was however, unclear how severe the power outages were across the country.

In Kyiv, the city administration said 10 percent of households had been disconnected. According to AFP, footage shared on social media from the western city of Lviv showed buildings in complete darkness in the city centre and street lights switched off. Ukrenergo said electricity supplies to businesses would be rationed throughout Wednesday.
