Ukraine Eyes Setting Up Largest Gas Storage Hub For European States, Energy Minister Says

Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko on Saturday said that his country eyes setting up a major European gas storage hub on its territory. He also said that the nation has one of the largest underground gas storage facilities in Europe with its storage capacity being more than 30 billion cubic metres of gas, as quoted by news agency Xinhua.

Xinhua quoted Galusjchenko as saying, “One of our key goals is the creation of a large energy hub in Ukraine, in particular, for the storage of gas by European states.”

Ukraine has one of the largest underground gas storage facilities in Europe, capable of storing more than 30 billion cubic meters of gas, the minister said.

He emphasised that at the moment Ukraine stands ready and is willing to offer 15 billion cubic metres of its underground gas storage capacities to the European partners.

This comes as Ukrtransgaz, a gas storage facility operator in Ukraine, successfully passed certification and secured its right to carry out gas storage activities in accordance with the updated rules of the European Union, reported news agency IANS.

In a recent event, Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba on April 1 said that Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the month of April is a ‘slap in the face to the international community’. At the start of Russia’s rating presidency of the body, he said, “I urge the current UN Security Council members to thwart any Russian attempts to abuse its presidency.”

He also called Russia “an outlaw on the UN Security Council” in a tweet. His tweet read, “Russian UNSC presidency is a slap in the face to the international community. I urge the current UNSC members to thwart any Russian attempts to abuse its presidency. I also remind that Russia is an outlaw on the UNSC. #BadRussianJoke #InsecurityCouncil”
