Donald Trump has pushed for a wider expansion of the Abraham Accords, urging countries including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to formally join the framework. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said negotiations with Iran were progressing “nicely” and suggested Tehran itself could eventually become part of the regional coalition. However, the proposal has reportedly placed Pakistan in a diplomatic dilemma, with Islamabad facing pressure between maintaining ties with Washington and avoiding domestic backlash over any move towards recognising Israel.
Trump’s Proposal
According to reports, Trump raised the issue during a high-level conference call with leaders from several Muslim-majority countries over the weekend. He reportedly urged more nations to join the Abraham Accords following the Iran conflict, arguing that the agreement could reshape the Middle East politically and economically.
Reports claimed the call briefly fell silent after Trump’s proposal, following which he jokingly asked participants, including Pakistan, whether they were still on the line.
Trump also warned that failure to secure a broader agreement with Iran could lead to renewed regional conflict and military escalation.

Pakistan’s Dilemma
Pakistan now faces a difficult diplomatic balancing act. While Islamabad has attempted to position itself as a mediator between the United States and Iran, joining the Abraham Accords would effectively mean formally recognising Israel-a politically sensitive issue within Pakistan.
The Palestine issue remains deeply emotional in Pakistan, and any move towards formal ties with Israel could trigger sharp domestic and political backlash against the government and military establishment.
At the same time, rejecting Trump’s push outright could complicate Pakistan’s ties with the United States.
Pakistan had also stayed away from the Abraham Accords during Trump’s first term in 2020. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan had then rejected the idea, saying recognition of Israel would go against Pakistan’s longstanding support for a two-state solution and its traditional foreign policy position.
