Tremors Felt In Delhi-NCR, Jammu-Kashmir As 5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Afghanistan

Earthquake tremors were felt in parts of Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, and other bordering areas of Afghanistan as a quake of 5.8 magnitudes jolted the neighbouring country on Saturday. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) on Saturday informed that a quake of 5.8 magnitude jolted Afghanistan. The epicenter is near Tajikistan and Afghanistan border in the Hindukush mountain range. The tremours were also experienced in Pakistan with no loss of life or property reported so far.

According to news agency PTI, this was the third quake to hit J&K in the day as the region was jolted by earthquakes occurring in Pakistan and in the Hindu Kush region at 8.36 am and 10.24 am. The two quakes, in that order, were measured at 4.8 and 5.2 on the Richter Scale, PTI reported. 

 

Several people from Delhi-NCR and Jammu and Kashmir as well as the neighbouring Pakistan took to social media to post about experiencing the tremours.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote, “Earthquake tremors have also been felt in Delhi. Hope everyone is safe.”

The Delhi Police took to Twitter and shared an emergency number for residents to dial in case of an emergency. “Hey Delhi people, We hope you all are safe! For any emergency help, dial 112,” the tweet read.

The depth of the earthquake was 196 kilometres and the tremor was felt in neighbouring Pakistan at Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and other cities.

 

Pakistan is often hit by earthquakes of varying intensity. The deadliest 2005 earthquake near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir left more than 74,000 people dead.

 

Earlier in the day, an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude hit Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 12:16 PM IST, the National Center for Seismology said. There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property.
