A bridge collapse overnight in Russia’s Kursk region caused a freight train derailment, the regional governor Alexander Khinshtein confirmed Sunday. The accident occurred in the Zheleznogorsk district when the bridge gave way as a freight locomotive was crossing, causing part of the train to fall onto the road below.
This incident comes just hours after a separate, deadly train accident in a nearby region bordering Ukraine, where at least seven people lost their lives. Authorities are currently investigating the causes of both disasters. Emergency services are on site, and further updates are expected.
In the Zheleznogorsk district of Kursk, a bridge gave way as a freight locomotive was crossing, causing part of the train to fall onto the road below. Alexander Khinshtein, the regional governor, confirmed the incident Sunday, stating on Telegram:
“Last night… in the Zheleznogorsk district, a bridge collapsed while a freight locomotive was passing. Part of the train fell onto the road below the bridge.”
Just hours earlier, a deadly train accident occurred in the neighboring Bryansk region. There, a road bridge collapsed onto a passenger train late Saturday, killing at least seven people and injuring at least 30, including two children. The train was traveling from Klimov to Moscow when the accident happened between Pilshino and Vygonichi stations.
Bryansk’s regional governor, Aleksandr Bogomaz, wrote on Telegram: “There are seven dead as a result of the collapse of a bridge onto railway tracks. Thirty victims, including two children, were taken to medical facilities of the Bryansk region.”

Russian authorities and Moscow Railways attributed the Bryansk incident to “illegal interference in transport operations,” though no further details have been provided.
The train’s engineer was among the dead, and an infant remains in serious condition, according to the Russian emergencies ministry. Passengers were evacuated and taken to a temporary accommodation center nearby, reported state news agency TASS.
Emergency services and government officials are actively working at both scenes. As Governor Bogomaz emphasized, “Everything necessary is being done to provide assistance to the victims.”
