PM Modi Meets Global Leaders At ASEAN-India, Holds First Bilateral Talks With Japanese Counterp

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met with the Australian PM Anthony Albanese, Philippines President Bongbong Marcos, and counterparts from Japan, Malaysia, and New Zealand, among other global leaders at the ASEAN-India Summit. PM Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Laos, met his counterparts after addressing the 21st ASEAN-Indian summit in Vientiane.

PM Modi shared about his meetings with his counterparts and other world leaders during his Laos visit.

Taking to social media platform X, he said that he was glad to meet his “friend” PM Albanese on the sidelines of the ASEAN-India summit. “Glad to meet my friend, PM Albanese,” PM Modi tweeted.

He also met President Bongbong Marcos of Philippines, which is also a member of the ASEAN. Sharing about his conversation with Marcos, PM Modi stated: “Had a wonderful conversation with President Bongbong Marcos of Philippines.”

PM Modi also met and interacted with his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim. “Always a delight to interact with PM Anwar Ibrahim,” he said in a post on X.

PM Modi interacted with the Founder and Executive chairman of the World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab.

He also met and held a conversation with European Council President Charles Michel.

Earlier today, PM Modi had a meeting with New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon. This was the first time that the two leaders held a bilateral talk. They spoke about economy, innovation, education, and tourism sectors.

“Had an excellent meeting with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. Christopher Luxon. We value our friendship with New Zealand, bound together by a commitment to democracy, freedom and rule of law. Our talks covered sectors such as economic cooperation, tourism, education and innovation,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Another highlight of PM’s Laos visit was his meeting with Japan’s newly appointed PM Shigeru Ishiba. The leaders met on the sidelines of the summit and talked about iways to enhance cooperation in infrastructure, connectivity, defence, and boosting cultural linkages.

PM Modi is visiting Laos at the invitation of Laos’s PM Sonexay Siphandone. After the ASEAN-India summit, PM Modi will be attending the 19th East Asia Summit as well.
