In a landmark address to the Ethiopian Parliament, PM Modi highlighted the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and economic ties between India and Ethiopia. He recalled centuries-old connections across the Indian Ocean, where merchants traded spices, cotton, coffee, and gold, exchanging ideas and culture alongside goods. Ports like Adulis and Dholera served as bridges between civilizations, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration. The Prime Minister also acknowledged the historic cooperation during Ethiopia’s liberation in 1941, when Indian soldiers fought alongside Ethiopians. Over the years, thousands of Indian teachers have contributed to Ethiopian education, shaping future generations, while Ethiopian students have studied in India, returning as nation-builders. He noted that some of these alumni, including the Speaker, were present in Parliament, symbolizing enduring people-to-people ties. Highlighting current economic cooperation, he mentioned that Indian companies have invested over $5 billion in Ethiopia, generating more than 75,000 local jobs across textiles, manufacturing, agriculture, and health sectors. Building on this partnership, both nations have decided to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, focusing on technology, innovation, sustainability, clean energy, food and health security, trade, and defense cooperation. The Prime Minister emphasized collaboration in climate-resilient agriculture, irrigation, soil health, and food processing, aiming to empower farmers in both countries and promote shared prosperity in the face of climate change challenges.
