Zohran Mamdani, a rising progressive leader and son of acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, has won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, bringing him one step closer to becoming one of the most prominent South Asian political figures in the United States. If victorious in the general election this November, Mamdani would become the first South Asian Muslim to serve as NYC Mayor.

His historic primary win has ignited conversations not only about his platform but also about the evolution of diverse political leadership in the U.S. Interestingly, a resurfaced 2020 social media post has added a new layer to Mamdani’s political journey. In the post, Mamdani had expressed admiration for Arya Rajendran, the then-21-year-old Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Sharing a CPI(M) post celebrating Rajendran’s election, Mamdani wrote: “them: so what kind of mayor does nyc need right now? me:”.

Who is Arya Rajendran?

Arya Rajendran made global headlines in 2020 when she became India’s youngest mayor at the age of 21, leading the municipal corporation of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. Representing the Communist Party of India (Marxist), she was elected from the Mudavanmugal ward during Kerala’s local body elections.

A mathematics student at the time, Arya was actively involved with the Students Federation of India (SFI) and began her political journey through Balasangham, the CPI(M)’s children’s wing at the age of 5. Her election was celebrated as a landmark for youth and women in politics.

Arya is married to Sachin Dev, the youngest sitting MLA in the Kerala Assembly and a fellow CPI(M) leader. In 2023, she again drew national attention when a photo of her working with her one-month-old baby went viral, symbolising the balance between leadership and motherhood.

She is the daughter of Rajendran, an electrician, and Sreelatha, an LIC agent, and has become a symbol of grassroots political rise rooted in Kerala’s leftist tradition.

Meanwhile, her ascent broke the previous age record held by Devendra Fadnavis, who became mayor of Nagpur at 27.
