North Korean leader Kim Jong Un replaced the military’s top general and called for more preparations for the possibility of war, as reported by news agency Reuters, citing state media KCNA on Thursday. He has also aimed for a boost in production of weapons and military drill expansion. Kim’s comments came at a meeting of the Central Military Commission during a discussion on plans for countermeasures to deter the country’s enemies, the report stated.

The country’s top general, Chief of the General Staff Pak Su Il, who served in his role for about seven months, was “dismissed,” KCNA reported. Kim has also set a target for the expansion of weapons production capacity, the report said. During his visit to weapons factories last week, he called for more missile engines, artillery, and other weapons to be built.

In the photos released by KCNA, Kim can be seen pointing at Seoul and areas surrounding the capital of South Korea on a map, as reported by Reuters. The United States has accused North Korea of providing arms to Russia for its war in Ukraine, including artillery shells, rockets, and missiles. However, the two countries have refuted those claims.

Earlier, Kim Jong Un had instructed the factories manufacturing arms in his country to boost up the production for missile engines, artillery, and other weapons to increase the capacity as an important part of bolstering the country’s defence capabilities. His instruction came as he visited multiple arms production facilities over several days amid Pyongyang’s push to develop various strategic and conventional weapons, reported Reuters citing KCNA.

Kim called for the mass production of “various kinds of cutting-edge strategic weapon engines… and thus make a great contribution to bringing about a revolution in developing new strategic weapons of our style,” the agency said.

The North Korean leader’s inspection which spanned from Thursday to Saturday included the production of engines for strategic cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, and shells for super large-calibre multiple-rocket launchers and transporter-erector-launchers, the KCNA stated. The launchers he inspected are normally used to fire ballistic missiles.
