Ganga Expressway: Massive Cave-In Reported in Unnao After Heavy Rain

A major infrastructure controversy has emerged in Uttar Pradesh after heavy rain caused a large pothole or cave-in on the Ganga Expressway in Unnao. The damaged section is reportedly near the Bashiratganj/Sonik area, where part of an entry ramp or carriageway gave way following rainfall. Workers reportedly placed a carpet over the affected portion as a temporary measure before repair work began. The 594-km Meerut–Prayagraj section of the Ganga Expressway was inaugurated on April 29, 2026, and is described as Uttar Pradesh’s longest expressway. Reports put the project cost at around ₹36,230 crore. The incident has triggered questions about construction quality, drainage and the road’s ability to withstand monsoon conditions. However, the reported damage appears to concern a specific ramp/link-road section rather than the entire 594-km expressway. Authorities have reportedly carried out repairs and restored normal traffic, while the incident has intensified scrutiny of the project’s construction and maintenance standards.
