Political developments across Europe have drawn attention as Serbia witnesses a major electoral setback for President Aleksandar Vučić’s political camp, while thousands take to the streets in the Czech capital, Prague, over proposed changes to public media funding. In Serbia, Vučić acknowledged that his party had lost the parliamentary election, facing a strong challenge from an opposition alliance led by a student movement. Students have been protesting against the government for nearly two years, emerging as a significant political force in the election. According to Vučić’s preliminary assessment, the student-backed electoral list could secure between 135 and 140 seats in the 250-member parliament, while his party is projected to win around 105 seats. However, he noted that the final results were still awaited. The outcome marks a significant development for a political camp that has maintained a strong influence over Serbian politics for years. Meanwhile, in Prague, thousands of demonstrators gathered at Old Town Square and surrounding streets on Sunday to oppose the Czech government’s proposed changes to the funding system for public radio and television. Under the proposal, public broadcasters would receive funding through the state budget instead of regular fees paid by individuals, households and businesses. Critics warn that the change could reduce funding for public media by approximately 15 percent. They also fear that shifting the funding mechanism could increase the governing coalition’s influence over public broadcasting. Protesters have called on the government to withdraw the proposal.
