Tremors were felt in various parts of north India including Delhi NCR and Chandigarh as an earthquake hit Pakistan on Wednesday. According to National Centre for Seismology, the quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale struck at 12:58 pm with epicentre in Pakistan, located 359 kilometres south west of Islamabad and 415 kilometres west of Amritsar, at a depth of 33 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports confirming any loss of life or property in both the countries.

This is second time in less than a month when Delhi experienced tremors. On August 29, an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter Scale had jolted Afghanistan with tremors rippling as far as Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan. The effect was felt in various parts of Pakistan also including Islamabad, parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
The epicentre of the 5.7 quake was located 277 kilometres northeast of Kabul at a depth of 255 kilometres which had struck at 11:26 am.

Earlier this year, in April, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake had hit Chamba region in Himachal Pradesh. Mild tremors were felt in Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana. There were no reports of any injuries or damage.
Due to its proximity to the Himalayas, Delhi-NCR and other adjoining places in the North India fall in an active seismic zone making the area vulnerable to earthquakes. The country is divided into four seismic zones with Zone V being seismically the most active region, while zone II is the least. Delhi falls under seismic Zone IV.
