SAN PEDRO CHOLULA, MEXICO — The World Class Film Awards 2026 placed San Pedro Cholula at the center of an international cultural exchange on August 8, bringing together filmmakers, performers, artists, public figures and creative leaders from multiple countries for a ceremony that extended far beyond traditional awards recognition.
Held at Teatro Cholula Ciudad Sagrada, the event brought representatives from the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Nigeria and Mexico into the same space, creating a platform where cinema, culture, public leadership and international visibility converged.
The ceremony was hosted by Rocío Plasencia and Mexican wrestler Xelhua, who guided an evening built around recognition, performance and cross-cultural connection.
At its core, the event honored creators working across cinema, television, visual arts and independent production. The 2026 honorees included Nicole A. Ashley, Lynn Santer, John Montoya, Dean Vegas, Arlette Wembe, Sophia Romma, Miguel Raymond, Jaya George, Thomas Whiteley, Dolapo Erinkitola, Vicentini Gomez, Brandon Glover, Kimber Leigh, Abhishek Mishrra, Cecy Rendón, Jordan Nancarrow, Le’Roy Kester, Eric Hamilton, Lois Banks and Mark Niedelson.
Among the most notable Mexican figures of the evening was acclaimed actor and producer Humberto Busto, recognized as a major guest of honor. His career includes projects such as Amores Perros, El Chapo, Diablero and Oso Polar, while his latest international chapter is already taking shape. Tijuana, todavía, which he stars in and produces, is set to have its world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival after being developed through Biennale College Cinema.
The World Class Film Awards also used the evening to highlight individuals from Puebla whose work contributes to the state’s cultural, artistic and international presence. Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier was recognized alongside Carla López-Malo Villalón, Víctor Gerardo Gabriel Chedraui and Natalie Hoyos López.
The ceremony received the support of San Pedro Cholula Mayor Tonantzin Fernández and her team, helping position the host city as an active participant in the event rather than simply its location.
A further emphasis was placed on Mexican figures whose influence extends beyond national borders. Special guests included Mexican actor and entertainer Freddy Ortega, major digital creators Fer Carnal and Magdalena Bembenek, and entrepreneur Anabel Bello Cortés, invited in recognition of their role in projecting Mexican culture, identity and creative vision to audiences around the world.
Rafael Moreno Valle Buitrón served as the event’s Cultural Ambassador, becoming one of the key links between the international guests, Puebla and the broader cultural identity of Mexico.
International participation was also felt beyond the theater. Priscilla Presley joined the ceremony through a special video message presented as part of her recognition, further expanding the event’s global reach.
The program balanced formal recognition with performance and heritage. Australian performer Dean Vegas delivered a live Elvis tribute, while a traditional pre-Hispanic dance presentation connected the international ceremony with the cultural roots of Cholula.
The 2026 edition was made possible with the support of Dr. Porfirio Ramírez Mendoza, Rafa Picard Agency, Natura Glow, Luna de Plata Mezcal, Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala, Hamo, Cien Fuegos Mezcal, Hotel Casa Juárez, Restaurante Casa Mexica and HPublicidad, alongside institutional representatives and local collaborators.
Under the direction of Sara Plasencia and Rodrigo Rayón, the World Class Film Awards continued to develop as a platform where recognition becomes a starting point for broader cultural and professional connections.
That approach gave the Cholula edition a distinctive character. Rather than presenting international cinema and Mexican culture as separate elements, the ceremony brought them together within the same narrative — one in which global filmmakers could be recognized while Puebla’s artistic identity, public leadership and cultural heritage remained equally visible.
For San Pedro Cholula, the result was more than an awards night. It was an opportunity to present the city as a place capable of hosting international creative exchange while maintaining a strong connection to its own history and cultural identity.
