New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9 and 10, the country’s Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata, Andalib Elias, confirmed on Sunday. She will also hold a bilateral meeting with Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, the envoy added.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Elias said, “PM Sheikh Hasina will attend the G20 Summit on September 9-10 in Delhi. We are also hoping that there will be a bilateral meeting between PM Modi and PM Hasina.”

The envoy said Bangladesh was optimistic about the results of the G20 meeting, which will be hosted in the national capital over two days and will see participation of leaders and delegates of over 40 countries, including member-states.

“Our honourable Prime Minister will be there to attend the G20 meeting on September 9 and 10. We are also hoping for a bilateral meeting between the two leaders,” the envoy told news agency ANI on Sunday.

“We are very optimistic about the results of the G20. We are an invited country but we have been actively participating in G20,” Elias added.

Saying that India has elevated G20 to new heights since assuming the presidency of the global forum, the envoy said, “The G20 has achieved new goals, new target and new levels (under India’s presidency). We are confident that under the presidency of India, the G20 will have a very successful closure.”

Asked how important the event was for Bangladesh, the country’s deputy high commissioner in Kolkata added, “It’s extremely important for us. Although we are not a member country, the decisions taken by G20 impact all the developing countries. The G20 represents 20 major economies of the world. So when one of our close friends, or closest friend, becomes president of that organisation, it definitely helps us in multiple ways.”
