Eight people lost their lives and 17 others were injured when a 21-year-old student went on a stabbing rampage in Wuxi, a city in eastern China, on Saturday evening, police said, news agency Reuters reported.
This attack took place just days after a tragic hit-and-run incident in Zhuhai, a city in southern China, where a car plowed into a crowd outside a sports centre, killing 35 people and injuring 43 others.
“Around 6:30 p.m. on November 16, 2024, a stabbing incident that resulted in casualties occurred at Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing city, causing 8 deaths and injuring another 17, The suspect was apprehended on the scene,” CNN quoted police as saying.
The statement revealed that the attacker, a recent graduate, was motivated by frustration over failing exams, not receiving a graduation certificate and dissatisfaction with internship pay. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. This is the latest in a series of mass casualty events to strike China.
Man Attacks Five People With Knife In Beijing
In a separate incident, police apprehended a 50-year-old man after a stabbing attack near an elementary school in Beijing in October injuring five people, including three children.
A 50-year-old suspect named Tang was arrested at the scene. And, all the injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Later the statement read that their injuries are not life-threatening.
A video shared online showed two children lying motionless and bleeding; one child was receiving aid from an adult, while the other still had a backpack on. A third person lay a short distance away, with bystanders providing first aid using bloodstained tissues. CNN has not independently verified the footage.
