Evacuation Of 1,200 Tourists Stranded In Sikkim To Begin On Monday

Incessant rain over the past few days triggered landslides in Sikkim, claiming the lives of at least six people and leaving over 1,200 tourists stranded. According to an official, the evacuation of over 1,200 tourists stranded in Sikkim’s Mangan district might is likely to begin on Monday if the weather allows, news agency PTI reported.

“It could not take place during the day due to unfavourable conditions,” an official said.

Chungthang’s Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kiran Thatal stated that if the weather conditions are favourable, the evacuation process will be carried out through air or road.

He also said that the district administration was taking care of the lodging of the stranded tourists, prividing them accommodation at various hotels in Lachung town. They were also being provided food at a nominal rate.

“In case of any inconvenience, the tourists have been directed to report to the Lachung police station,” the SDM said.

Meanwhile, N B Dahal, Roads & Bridges Department Minister, reached Lachung town and interacted with the tourists to understand their grievances, and also assured them a safe evacuation at the earliest.

Yediyurappa To Appear Before CID For Inquiry On June 17

Senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa stated that he will appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday i.e. June 17 for an inquiry regarding the POCSO case registered against him.

The former CM said that people would “teach a lesson to those indulging in conspiracies against him”.

On Friday, the Karnataka High Court restrained the CID from arresting Yediyurappa in connection with the POCSO case. The High Court also directed the BJP leader to appear before CID on June 17.

“I had gone to Delhi for a pre scheduled programme. I had informed in advance in writing that I will appear for an inquiry on June 17.  The High Court has given an order restraining CID (from arresting). I’m appearing for an inquiry on Monday. Unnecessarily some tried to create confusion, I don’t want to blame anyone, everyone knows the fact, Yediyurappa. While speaking to reporters here,” PTI quoted the BJP leader as saying.
