Turkey’s state-run aerospace company came under a deadly “terrorist attack” near the capital Ankara on Wednesday, said the government officials. At least five people were killed in the attack on Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) headquarters in the outskirts of Ankara, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

The minister said that the attackers, a man and a woman were killed, reported CNN.

Videos on social media showed the moments when the TUSAS headquarters was rocked by the attacks. In one of the videos, an assailant was seen wearing backpacks and carrying guns, approaching the entrance of the aerospace company’s headquarters.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler hinted at the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as playing a role in the attacks.

Turkey, the European Union, and the United States have classified PKK as a terrorist organisation.

“We [Turkey] punish the dishonourable PKK members as they deserve over and over again, but they never seem to learn,” said the defence minister without giving away any further details.

The interior minister also said that an initial assessment has suggested that the PKK was behind the attacks while the process to identify the attackers is underway.

Later on Wednesday, Turkey struck several Kurdish areas in Syria and Iraq.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was in Russia’s Kazan for the BRICS Summit at the time of the attacks, condemned the “vile attack” that targeted the country’s survival and defence initiatives. “I extend my best wishes to our nation and the devoted employees of TUSAS, the source of pride for our defence industry,” the Turkish president wrote.
