MIDDLE EAST FLASH: Houthi F-15 Claim Puts Saudi Air Defence Under Fresh Spotlight

Saudi Arabia’s long-running military confrontation with the Houthi movement in Yemen has entered another tense phase, with a fresh claim from the group putting Riyadh’s air operations under renewed scrutiny. The Houthis say they targeted and brought down a Saudi F-15 fighter over Yemen’s Marib province using a locally manufactured surface-to-air missile. They have also released material that they describe as evidence of the alleged strike and the aircraft’s wreckage. The reported incident, however, has not been independently verified, and Saudi authorities have not confirmed the loss of an F-15. The competing claims leave several important details unresolved, including the exact circumstances of the reported incident and whether the aircraft was actually destroyed. The development came after a separate security alert near Mecca, where Saudi authorities said a drone was intercepted south of the holy city. The Houthis have denied targeting Mecca, adding another disputed element to the rapidly developing situation. Saudi Arabia began its military intervention in Yemen in 2015, citing concerns over the growing strength of the Houthi movement along its southern border. What was expected to be a relatively short campaign developed into a prolonged conflict involving airstrikes, missiles, drones and repeated cross-border attacks. The latest F-15 claim could become significant if independently confirmed, as it would indicate a direct threat to Saudi manned combat aircraft operating over Yemen. For now, the incident remains a contested claim, while the wider Yemen conflict continues to create serious security concerns across the Arabian Peninsula.
