Trump Called Munir Before Tehran Visit: What Was Discussed Amid US-Iran Tensions?

Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir Arrived Tehran on Monday, August 24, 2026, amid escalating military and political tensions between the United States and Iran. His visit comes a week after US President Donald Trump spoke to him over the phone and asked him to bring Iran back to the negotiating table.

Trump Called Munir Before Tehran Visit

According to a Reuters report, Trump himself initiated the call, which was not disclosed publicly at the time. The White House Press Secretary’s Office has not officially commented on the conversation or revealed what was discussed.

The call came after Trump had warned that countries providing Iran with any form of economic support would face serious consequences. Iran, in response, threatened to completely halt oil exports through the Persian Gulf.

The statement said Munir would meet key Iranian leaders during his visit to advance ongoing efforts to achieve a “peaceful, sustainable and comprehensive” resolution to the conflicts in the Middle East.

This is Munir’s fourth visit to Tehran in less than six months.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA said the four visits by Munir to Tehran indicate that, despite repeated ups and downs, the diplomatic route between Iran and the United States runs through Pakistan.

IRNA also highlighted Iran’s diplomatic position, saying Tehran’s official stance in recent weeks suggests that Iran is first seeking a return by the US to commitments it made under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding but never implemented.

Munir To Meet Khamenei Allies

Amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, Munir and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Tehran. The Pakistani military officially confirmed the visit, describing it as an effort to promote peace and stability in the region.

Munir is expected to meet strategists close to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Discussions are expected to focus on reducing tensions between the US and Iran, regional security and other issues.

The meeting also comes after Iran-backed Houthi forces recently attacked Saudi Arabia, a Pakistani ally. The issue is expected to be discussed during the talks between Pakistan and Iran.

‘Lack Of Mutual Trust Between US, Iran’

The US and Iran had reached an interim peace agreement in June 2026, known as the “Islamabad Memorandum”. However, renewed clashes between the two countries soon rendered the agreement ineffective, raising fears of a wider war in the region.

According to a Pakistani source cited in the report, there is currently a significant lack of mutual trust between Washington and Tehran. Munir’s visit is aimed at helping bridge that gap.

Munir’s Fourth Tehran Visit In Six Months

This is Munir’s fourth visit to Tehran in less than six months. Iranian state news agency IRNA said his repeated visits highlight Pakistan’s role as a channel for diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran despite ongoing tensions.

IRNA said Tehran’s primary demand is for Washington to first return to the commitments it made under the “Islamabad Memorandum”, which Iran says the US signed but never implemented.
