PAKISTAN MIDNIGHT OPERATION: Imran Khan Taken Out Of Jail But Never Reaches Shifa Hospital

A midnight episode involving former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has triggered fresh questions over the Shehbaz Sharif government and the implementation of a Supreme Court order concerning his medical treatment. According to the information provided, the Supreme Court had ordered that Imran Khan be taken from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for examination by specialist doctors and treatment if required. Around 12:30 am, Imran was reportedly taken out of the jail and a convoy moved towards Islamabad, with Shifa Hospital being described as the destination. However, the convoy reached Shifa Hospital without Imran Khan. Five police vehicles reportedly entered the hospital, while Imran’s personal doctor, Faisal Sultan, waited there for hours. Imran was subsequently taken to the government-run PIMS Hospital instead. The Pakistan government later explained that the decision to change the hospital was taken because of security concerns and the possibility of a large gathering of PTI supporters outside Shifa Hospital. The government claimed that Shifa International doctors were present at PIMS and that a team of specialists examined Imran, including an eye examination, blood-pressure check and an injection. He was reportedly declared medically fit. Imran Khan’s sister Uzma Khan, however, questioned the government’s version and alleged that the detailed medical examination ordered by the Supreme Court was not carried out as directed. PTI has also accused the government of contempt of court and said it would approach the Supreme Court. The episode has intensified the ongoing political confrontation surrounding Imran Khan, PTI and Pakistan’s military establishment. The key question now is whether the change of hospital amounted to non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s order or was justified by security concerns, as claimed by the government.
