Polling has concluded in Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections and referendum, held amid tight security and sporadic incidents of violence. Voting ended at 4.30 pm on Thursday, with officials confirming that ballot counting began shortly afterwards and will continue through the night. Initial trends have already started to emerge, heightening political anticipation across the country. Authorities expect clearer results to take shape by around 8 pm as counting progresses in phases across constituencies nationwide.
Early Trends Emerge
The first trend has come in from the Bandarban seat, where the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is currently leading. BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has urged election authorities to declare results swiftly, stating that voters have the right to know the outcome of the ballots they cast without undue delay.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has alleged irregularities in the voting process. The party has called for polling to be suspended in three constituencies-Cumilla-8, Shariatpur-2 and Patuakhali-1-citing concerns over alleged disruptions and malpractice.
According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, voter turnout stood at 47.91% as of 2 pm. Updated turnout figures are expected once final tallies are compiled.
India Declines Observer Role
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that it had received an invitation to send observers for the Bangladeshi elections but chose not to do so. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that while the invitation was acknowledged, no further action was taken.
The elections were conducted under heightened security arrangements, though reports of isolated violence surfaced in certain areas during the day. Despite these incidents, officials said polling concluded as scheduled.
With counting now under way, attention is firmly focused on whether early leads will translate into decisive victories. Final results are expected later in the evening, though complete confirmation across all constituencies may take longer as officials verify and consolidate the vote.
