Paris Violence: 2 Dead, 200 Injured After PSG’s Victory Celebrations Take Tragic Turn

Two people have died and around 200 have been injured after an overnight celebrations over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)’s victory in the Champions League victory took a tragic turn on Sunday.

The winners of the European club soccer’s biggest prize had arrived in Paris on Sunday after winning 5-0 win against Inter Milan in Munich on Saturday night, Associated Press reported.

The violence broke out near the iconic Champs-Élysées avenue in the French capital, where around 50,000 people had gathered to witness the PSG’s victory.

The football fans set off flares and fireworks; and clashed with the police. Over 500 people have been arrested across France, including 491 arrests in Paris alone.

Meanwhile, a police officer was accidentally hit by fireworks at a PSG gathering in Coutances in northwest France. 

The two fatalities include a man, who was riding a scooter in Paris, after he was hit by a car around a few kilometres from Champs-Élysées. The driver has been detained an the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.

While a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during a during a PSG street party in western city of Dax. 

PSG has denounced the violence in Paris. “These isolated acts are contrary to the club’s values, and don’t at all represent the immense majority of our fans,” PSG said in a statement.

A total of 201 people have been injured around Paris, while four of them are said to have suffered serious injuries, the Paris police chief said.
