Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed his anguish over the recent attack at a Christmas market in Germany, stating that it “pains my heart” when attempts are made to spread violence and disrupt society. Speaking at a Christmas celebration organised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in Delhi, Modi emphasised the importance of love, harmony, and brotherhood, drawing from the teachings of Jesus Christ.
“The teachings of Lord Christ celebrate love, harmony, and brotherhood. It is important that we all work to make this spirit stronger. However, it pains my heart when there are attempts to spread violence and cause disruption in society. Just a few days ago, we saw what happened at the Christmas market in Germany. It is essential that we come together to fight such challenges,” Modi remarked.

Addressing the gathering, he also marked the 80th anniversary of the CBCI, conveying his congratulations to the organisation. “This occasion is even more special because this year marks the 80th anniversary of the CBCI. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the CBCI and all its associated members,” he added.
The Prime Minister highlighted the achievements of the Indian diaspora, including the recent honour bestowed upon Cardinal George Kouvakad by Pope Francis. “A few weeks ago, His Eminence Cardinal George Kouvakad was honoured with the title of Cardinal by His Holiness Pope Francis. When an Indian reaches such a high level of achievement, the entire nation feels a sense of pride,” Modi said.

In his address, the Prime Minister also reaffirmed India’s commitment to its citizens abroad, saying, “India considers it its duty to protect every citizen, no matter where they are in the world, and ensure their safety in times of crisis.” He also spoke about India’s foreign policy, stressing the importance of prioritising both national and human interests.

Reflecting on the progress of the nation, Modi noted, “In the past 10 years, 250 million people in India have overcome poverty. This has happened because the poor have been given hope that victory over poverty is possible. In the same period, India has risen from the 10th largest economy to the 5th largest economy, due to our trust in ourselves.”
On the occasion of Christmas, Modi conveyed his best wishes, stating, “Christmas is even more special as you begin the Jubilee Year, which holds great significance for all of you. I wish you all the very best for the various initiatives planned for the Jubilee Year. This time, for the Jubilee Year, you have chosen a theme that revolves around hope. The Holy Bible sees hope as a source of strength and peace!”
He concluded by urging collective efforts for a brighter future, saying, “I am confident that our collective efforts will take our country forward. ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) is our goal, and we must achieve it together. It is our responsibility to ensure that future generations inherit a prosperous and brighter India.”

German Christmas Market Attack
The Prime Minister’s remarks came days after India strongly condemned the deadly attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, which claimed five lives, including that of a 9-year-old child, and injured over 200 people. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed solidarity with the victims, stating, “We condemn the horrific and senseless attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany. Several precious lives have been lost, and many have been injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims. Our Mission is in contact with Indians who are injured, as well as their families, and rendering all possible assistance.”
The attack, which occurred on Friday evening, involved a car-ramming incident that left the busy Christmas market in shock. German authorities identified a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, Taleb A., as the suspected driver. He was arrested at the scene, and police conducted a search of his residence overnight.
