Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a fresh appeal on Sunday called for the promotion of domestic tourism and suggested that the Indian islands be developed as a destination for tourism. While addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Khodaldham Trust Cancer Hospital in Gujarat, he urged the countrymen to take nine solemn pledges, including promoting tourism.
According to news agency ANI, PM Modi said, “Think about your country first. Do whatever you wish for your country first. If you are planning a vacation, look up tourism sites in your homeland and consider visiting these places with your loved ones. Do what you can to promote tourism in India.”
The remarks come after a recent diplomatic row between India and Maldives after several junior ministers and government officials made derogatory statements about India, ridiculing Prime Minister Modi’s call to promote Lakshadweep as a beach tourism destination.
In response, New Delhi strongly objected to the viral posts and called the Maldivian envoy to the South Block.
