New Delhi: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and home secretary Suella Braverman were heckled on Monday when they visited Essex town centre. The leaders were told to “go away” during a walkabout in an Essex town centre.

The incident took place when they were walking down Chelmsford high street with three police officers ahead of the launch of an anti-social behaviour drive.

One woman shouted “allow migrants into our country” and “refugees deserve sanctuary in Britain”.

She also said, “Go away. We don’t want you here.”

The demonstration was a direct response to the UK government’s measures to curb immigration via small boats. Despite the demonstrators’ outcry, neither Rishi Sunak nor Suella Braverman reacted and continued to converse with the police officials.

A video capturing the incident has gone viral, displaying the demonstrators shouting while the British leaders carried on walking for around five minutes. Following this, Sunak proceeded to Chelmsford Boxing Club to discuss his plans to tackle anti-social behavior.

During his visit, Sunak said he was confident they had designed a bill that was “robust and effective”. “The home secretary and I have worked incredibly closely for the last two months to get the legislation exactly right,” he was quoted as saying by Sky News.

“This is a tough piece of legislation, the likes of which we haven’t seen. It’s important that it is effective, which it will be. It is also important that we abide by our international obligations. This is a country and government that does follow the law,” he added.
